As Aya's condition gradually worsen, she could no longer walk or stand anymore. She would sometimes choke when she eat and she struggled to speak. There was only one thing that she could do, albeit which much difficulty. She could still write.
One day her mum visited her at the hospital and seeing her struggling hard to write her diary, her mum asked her to rest. But she said..
"Okaasan.. you said that I can still write right? That's the only thing that I could still do. I have to write what I have in mind now because that is the only prove that I am living today."
Even when she could hardly hold her crayon, she would still write her diary. I do not know whether the movie followed the true diary content but in the movie.. Despite the diary began with her questioning why she had to be the one to suffer from this cruel disease, it sweetly ended with a word: "Arigatou".
Thanking her parents and siblings for being there right to the end, thanking her friends for giving her sweet memories that the disease could never take away, thanking the medical staff for their effort, and probably, thanking God that she lived.
That diary was then compiled and published with the title "One litre of tears". It was filled with many encouraging words that she wrote to encourage herself to live on. Zutto ikete ne (live on forever), she said.
18 million copies sold. Now that the drama was made and more people are inspired by a young girl who fought the disease for 10 years and finally died courageously 18 years ago.
To say that the disease 'chose' her.. as Vy said, well maybe it's debatable. The disease may not have chosen her, but unless you believe that all these events are purely random, surely there has to be a subject that chose her. Debating on who and why the subject chose her would be complicated and endless.
But given how she inspired so many people through her diary, it was probably a right choice. I wouldn't know if I would be able to come up with that diary if I were to take her place. I wouldn't know if I have that much courage. And in this entire life, even with this healthy body, I wouldn't know if I could ever achieve what she has achieved.
One thing I know for sure though. It's good to be living ^^

Sorry, can't help myself, I always like to talk about this kind of topic. =D
Precisely because different things happen to different person that the word 'choose' is envitably used.
You could say that the fact that each of us has to deal with different problem has to do with the fact that each of us is unique by design. I may not be able to deal with your problem and vice versa.
No need to apologise haha.. I always welcome such discussion =D
