I have not been to too many weddings this year.
those 'wedding years' were over.
which is good. and bad as well.
because I was soo outdated with the angpao rate, I accidentally gave a very, very, er.. 'substandard' angpao to one of my friends.
It was combination of my ignorance and unpreparedness cash-wise on that day itself.
Still feel paiseh till now. But since we are not that close, also awkward to do anything about it afterwards.
sigh..
Well.. if by some far-fetched possibility you read this blog, I just want to say sorry.
And I would love to treat you dinner to partially make u for that hah.
the last wedding I attended was that of Owen's.
It was great in a way that it brought back so much memories.
Almost like a recap of my 14 years journey here. All those familiar heartwarming faces :)
Anyway.. of those couple of weddings I attended.. there was one that particularly stood out.
It was my sembawang friend's wedding. or rather, kebaktian ucapan syukur.
They didn't really have a banquet here.
For the uninitiated, those sembawang friends that we fondly call 'batch 5', are the 24 people I came to Singapore with on 15 Nov 1999. My first family in Singapore.
This friend of mine, Pras, had his holy matrimony cum wedding celebration at Bukit Batok Presbyterian Church. First time there!
Everything about that event was.. 'different'. Unusual for me.
I think Pras wore suit and his bride wore batik dress. Which was awesome.
When they marched in, Pras sang a song. A Christian song, if I remember correctly.
A song about total surrender to God.
How about that?
Then the sermon. Pras chose the prodigal son story as the topic for his preacher.
I was simply blown away.
And looking around, I saw people wearing batik, and smart casuals, and batik.
Very.. down to earth. Nothing fancy.
The food? Didn't have chance to taste it as I had to leave earlier.
But I saw tumpeng, and sate. Which again was unusual to me.
For a newly wed who would soon be facing long distance relationship, they looked happy.
Pras would go back to Jogja to study theology while his wife is still doing her 'kedokteran' in another city.
It's been a long journey since I first met Pras, a small young boy from an even smaller town, Muntilan.
He was humble, but unusually bold with strong sense of justice.
He is not into all those latest fashion trend, but he has fiery passion for our country's future.
Surely one of the brightest minds I have ever met.
And I envy him.
For that simple life and value he has stood by till today.
I would love to give my bride-to-be the most wonderful wedding I can ever think of and afford.
But.. I wish she will be that person who can see the beauty of a simple and God-centered wedding like the one Pras had.
Because it is more than just about the wedding.
