There are few words and phrases which I don't exactly understand, i.e. what it means, how it is really used, etc. And that is despite the numerous encounters I had with them.
For example, I never know how and when I can use this-> blablablabla (pun intended)
Ya.. that 'pun intended' is something I never use before.
Then, there is this -> bitching
Is it totally similar to 'complain'? But it seems to carry different kind of meaning. And why bitch? So do you only use it when the person who is complaining is a woman?
But I think I have finally understood this word much better when I read about the whole blinky mummy- xia xue- silly celly saga. Yes call me outdated but I never paid special attention to their blogs until recently. And only today did I learn about the 'disagreement' they have had before.
And only today did I learn that 'bitching's is indeed different from complaining; It is much more 'powerful' and frightening.
Anyway, last Sunday I was q-ing for the shuttle bus that take ppl from Suntec to City Hall. And in front of me were three middle-aged ladies talking in hokkien, or tio chiu, whatever
Woman A: She got a photogenic face.. (talking to woman B, pointing at woman C)
Woman C: What did she say? (asking woman B)
Woman B: Oh she said you got a photogenic face (smiling)
Woman C: Haha aiyoh nonsense lah.. where got??! (I dunno if she is blushing at this point, her makeup was too thick u see)
Woman A: Eh.. I am serious.. When you have seen so many faces like I do, you can tell whether someone is photogenic or not.
Woman C: This kind of thing how can tell one?
Woman A: Can.. You see (telling woman B who only nodded all the way), she got that shape, this kind of shape looks best when captured in photo.
Then after few rounds of convincing and denial...
Woman C: Look at this.. what do you think? (Happily took out her passport sized photo and show it to woman A)
I took a peek too but don't ask me how she looked like there.. let's just say that she wasn't exactly photogenic there..
Woman A: ...... (I think she was totally dumbfounded)
Woman C: This is recently taken one.. (a bit proud, probably feeling that she looks young there)
Woman A: ..... Eh you look like Vietnamese, does your father or mother has anything to do with that?
Quite a smart skill in changing the topic I should say, woman C wasn't exactly pleased with the new topic but she went along anyway and from then on they stopped mentioning the word "photogenic".
Duh.. poor woman. I bet she would go home telling her husband and kids how she was praised. Her husband would have to agree of course. So you see.. if you want to praise someone, never ever say that she is "photogenic". Well, at least use it carefully.
