LKY

I remember that sometimes ago some people in our very own Indon' students forum were discussing Singaporean's ignorance towards politics. Some pointed out that the lowly educated bus drivers in Indonesia are generally more aware of their country's politics than the white collars here. And some of my fellow Indonesians are so damn proud of that.

Politics. What a big word.

Those youngsters who had the chance to meet Lee Kuan Yew brought up the same issue. They fear for the country's future as Singapore's young generation nowadays are mostly clueless with regards to the country's politics. They blame the PAP's dominance and they ask for a level playing field to allow opposition parties to grow.

This world is all about finding the unlevel playing field where you gain advantage over the others. But I won't dwell on the naive questions they brought up. What impressed me was LKY's remark on that word, politics.

What is politic? Is battling it out with opposition or fighting inside the parliament the only thing that you can think about when you talk about politic?
Politics is the art of governing the nation and the people. It's about providing your citizens with good house, good food, good education, and good career.

I am not a politician so I don't know how it feels to be fighting in political arena. But it has to be harder than your average job's life. And in LKY Singapore has a politician who is really one of a kind. It will probably take another 100 years to find another LKY, whether you like him or not.

Father

I am reading the book "Wild at Heart". One of the most striking points that the author made was that of how many, if not almost all, men are most severely wounded by their own father. You would have thought that your dad will be the one who believes in you when everyone else is doubting you. You expect him to do so. Coz when he does, you know that it ain't matter even if the rest are against you. So when it turns out that he is siding with those who doubt you. It hurts the most. It kills off your hope. It strips you off your courage and belief to be a real man. Because the man who is suppose to show you how to be a real man, the one whose approval matters the most.. does not side with you. He loves you.. yes. But a father's role is not simply to love and nurture. He is more than just that. He is your assurance, stronghold, strength. He leads you into adventure, he fights with you side by side, he shows you how to rescue a beauty. When your father of flesh and blood ca...
